Configuring Hot Standby Router Protocol
HSRP is a propietary protocol from Cisco Systems, but officially standard. Provides gateway redundancy by 2 routers. One will be active and the other will be the standby.
HSRP standard definition can be found on the RFC2281
Debrief:
- Does not provide load balancing
- IPv6 supported
- Uses UDP port 1985
- Default priority 100
- Hello interval is 3 seconds
- Uses multicast address 224.0.0.2
Accepted states for an interface that belongs to an HSRP group.:
- Speak. Gateway selection in progress
- Active. Router is the active gateway
- Standby. Router is the standby gateway
- Listen. Router is not active
For this lab we will use the following topology:
And in the following video we will see HSRP configuration steps. We will leave default timers. Besides we will set up interfaces status tracking. In this way if one of the links goes down, HSRP will take care of changing the router to maintain the gateway up.
